Post Buy a car or bring one into CR.
I want to have a car in CR went I will move there.
I don’t know if is better to buy an automobile in Florida with a good price and send it to CR and pay the imports, or to buy one in CR. I already check the prices and there are very expensive in CR.
Can’t anybody tell me what will be my best bet?
Thank you,

Maria,

If you are importing a car that is not commonly available in CR, it will make sense to import.

But, use professionals to ship, pay taxes and cut through red tape. The whole thing should cost to you $1,000.00 including shipping from Tampa, plus taxes.

I am in the process of shipping one. I have done a lot of home work in this area.

Goodluck!

Steven

Same answer as the appliances. I have importedcars twice and had good results and would do it again. But I have capable contacts to handle everything at a modest price and am not inconvenienced by delays. I don't agree that prices are high here, relatively speaking, and unless you can absorb the inconvenience and delays in shipping and processing, buy here. You can get many very nice cars with full new warranty at the dealers, like Suzuki, Daihatsu, etc., good economical cars, brand new wiyth warranty, for under $10k. Also, many gringos move here and buy or import and become desperate to sell when they are ready to bug out. My advice...shop here.

I commented a bit about this in my reply to your previous post [q.v.] but the advice to buy a car IN CR seems more sensible since then you would be getting an auto that is already certified and has its duties already paid in full, making you ready to drive off the lot with it.

There have been a number of posters here in the past who have written that they wished that they had NOT imported their vehicle since the red tape went on forever and they seemd to have to pay some unexpected new fee every time they turned around while trying to make their imported vehicle legal to drive in CR.

Something to consider, anyway...

In looking into the costs of driving my 86 Nissan p/u from CA to CR, aside from gas, fees, etc, it would cost me $1002 to pay the Customs fees on a vehicle with a blue book of $1070. Somethings not right here! Wouldn't I be better off selling it here and buying one in Coto Brus where my finca is?
(and I haven't even researched what it would take to register it, license fees, inspections, etc.)
Thanks for any feedback, especially from people having done this and done the journey from the US to CR.

I'm really confused now. I am moving to San Jose this summer and will buy a car. All my research so far indicates that all new cars have such heavy customs and import taxes that it's almost twice the cost of the car in the States. Are there some cars that are excluded from this? Please tell me more!
