Operating a Internet based business in CR

Postby Jwalker » Feb 14, 2012, 6:18 pm

My wife and I would like to move to CR and would be operating an Internet based business initially from a home office with the intent to rent office space eventually. It is a medical billing business and all clientele would be in the US. Does anyone have experience with this or have knowledge of attorneys that do? Should we consult a US based attorney or a CR attorney. Thank you

Are you looking to hire employees in Costa Rica or just work yourself while you live in Costa Rica? If you plan to hire, learn the social security system and labor benefit laws. They are very different from North America. If you are just working yourself via computer, you don't need a lawyer.

If you need long term apartment rentals or commercial rental space, you can check For Rent Costa Rica. Skilled labor is easier to find in the capital, so keep that in mind.

I believe that, as your business is likely being operated from your home and online, you won't need a 'patente' - a commercial business licence.

However, there may be zone restrictions on the house and the type of business you can conduct there, so it is worth checking into.

As soon as you open an office, this changes. A patente is easy to obtain, but necessary.
