Post What has changed for moving to Costa Rica
I made 19 trips to Costa Rica between 1997 and 2000. For an American to live in Costa Rica what are the current requirements?

Capitan: If you are planning on living here and doing it legally, you have to apply for residency. The easier route is applying at 'rentista' status and putting $60,000 into a Costa Rica bank account. Otherwise, you will have to exit the country every 90 days for 72 hours. Of course, being legal, you'll be able to work legally. If you plan on retiring, you can apply as a pensionado and you have to show $600 per month I believe from Social security or penion from your home country. You may want to visit: www.therealcostarica.com or www.arcr.net for more detailed information for the residency requirements if interested. I just became legal last year myself. Good luck!

Thanks, I am a maritime officer so the leaving every 90 days wouldn't be a problem as I would be returning to work, but, my wife is a Colombian citizen/U.S. resident so it would have to be legal. The USA is no longer an attractive place to reside so we will be living elsewhere in the future.
